First Look: Olympus E-520

Yesterday, I went out and got a new toy. No, not that kind of toy - get your mind out the gutter (and you know who you are.) While I love love LOVE my Canon EOS-5D, sometimes it is too much camera. While I like my Canon PwerShot G9 a whole lot, sometimes it is just not enough. So, I figured I needed something in the middle: more capabilities than the G19, but not nearly as large as the 5D. This weekend, I found what I think will work, and yesterday I picked up my new Olympus E-520.
The kit came with the Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f3.5/5.6 zoom lens, which is not the lens I plan to use for most shooting. Instead, I have ordered the Zuiko Digital 25mm f2.8 "pancake" lens, which will keep the camera small and unobtrusive - ideal for street photography in the post-9/11 USofA. I will also be getting a Lensbaby Composer for this camera (of course.)

| St. Paul's UMC, Houston |
After letting the battery charge, I took advantage of the fact that I wasn't driving home to get some test shots. The first one I wanted to share (above) is of St. Paul's UMC, in the Museum District. Sometimes the setting sun really shows off the steeple of this church. though I took this shot a little too early for that. I did crop out the cars and street stuff from the bottom, leaving (mostly) just the building and sky.

The second shot I took while waiting for the METROrail train to cross the intersection. This was a real snapshot, as I didn't have a lot of time to compose it.

| Childrens Museum, Houston |
Last, I have a shot of the main entrance to the Childrens Museum. I took this as we were driving past, and had to angle the shot a bit to keep from cutting the building off with the frame of the car.
First impressions: the camera performs pretty much as expected. While it is physically small, it is not that difficult to handle (I have large hands, so this was a concern.) The Live View feature is pretty much useless while in a moving vehicle (or so it seems.) The color and image quality looks good: I took all these shots at normal color and saturation levels, and didn't make any changes or tweaks in post-processing.
