Hate crimes
...the hell, dude!?
Student Who Took Religious Icon Getting Death Threats
A UCF student claims he’s getting death threats for messing with something sacred.
Webster Cook says he smuggled a Eucharist, a small bread wafer that to Catholics symbolic of the Body of Christ after a priest blesses it, out of mass, didn’t eat it as he was supposed to do, but instead walked with it.
One would guess, by their reaction, that some Catholics were a mite upset by this. One would be right...
“We don’t know 100% what Mr. Cooks motivation was,” said Susan Fani a spokesperson with the local Catholic diocese. “However, if anything were to qualify as a hate crime, to us this seems like this might be it.”
Wait. right. there. A hate crime? A. hate. crime!? Let's think about this a minute:
- Tying a guy to the back of a pickup and dragging him down the road until his bodyparts come off - Hate crime.
- Standing by and saying nothing while 6 MILLION people are murdered because of their religious affiliation, and more because of their ethnic background/sexual orientation - Hate crime, or at least 'aiding and abetting'.
- Wiping out entire indigenous populations because they didn't worship the same God you did, the same way you did - Hate crime.
- Standing by and doing nothing while a generation of young people were raped by some members of the clergy whom you put in a position of authority over them - Maybe not a hate crime, but certainly not something to be terribly proud of.
- Removing a bread wafer from your mouth, instead of swallowing it - NOT a hate crime. (Poor judgement, maybe.)
However, it seems the local Catholics want someone in authority to do something:
"We just expect the University to take this seriously,” she added “To send a message to not just Mr. Cook but the whole community that this kind of really complete sacrilege will not be tolerated.”
Actually, this sounds kinda reasonable. I too think the University should take this seriously, and refer the matter to law enforcement. After all, people should not be subjected to death threats for failing to eat those little round desiccants that are handed out during Communion. Threatening to kill someone on account of this is more than a complete sacrilege, it is an affront to God - and it is also a crime.

This reminds me of the (over)reaction of some in the Islamic community to various cartoons. And, in all fairness, I think it is hypocritical to criticize the Muslims for their calls for death and violence, while giving the Catholics involved (who are fellow Christians and from the USofA) a pass.
I have a question: if Patience had gone to Mass (with a friend, in case you aren't Catholic), had done the same thing this boy did, and you heard people taking about having her killed - wouldn't you go to the police? If Son had been in this young man's place (regardless of age), that is exactly what I would have done.

Mr. Cook I know my family eagerly awaits the recipe.
