Time to declare Peace in the 'War on Christmas'
Now that December 25 has come and gone, can we declare a truce in the "War on Christmas" -- or at least an extended cease fire?
I understand the reasoning behind this 'war' - some goober decides to get all politically correct, and instructs others (whether out of fear of a lawsuit, or fear of offending someone, or just a simple case of headupthebuttitis) not to use the term "Merry Christmas" when dealing with the public. Then, some Christian goober decides to get his panties all in a wad over this cardinal sin commited against the Almighty by the evil Secular-Progressives, then the news media piles on and rakes this dungheap into a mighty mountain, then even more folks watch their blood pressure rise along with their credit card balance... Until, eventually, we are all going at it hammer-and-tongs, having completely forgotten the "reason for the season" in our overwhelming urge to stick it to the other side, and gain a 'victory' that may well be Pyrrhic. Alas, how sweet will that victory taste if you are in your grave due to a coronary, or not speaking with the rest of your family because they can't stand your holier-than-thou attitude?
And, folks, while this whole thing may be much ado about nothing to some, it impacts families - and not in a positive way. The tension built up can also be released in very unpleasant ways, as happened during the "Battle in Seattle" when SeaTac airport removed all the Christmas trees after being threated with a lawsuit by a rabbi, who in turn was threatened by lots of folks.
Somehow, I doubt this is how the Savior wanted to see His birthday being celebrated.
Fortunately, it appears that the next generation may in fact find a "path to Peace" - as this story about some students in Katy would indicate. As Polimom put it so eloquently,
...They weren’t worried about Political Correctness or “wars” on Christmas. They were wholly focused on giving — and the neighbors gladly received, just as I did.
So, folks, let's resolve to follow the lead of those kids, and those "old people", in Katy come December next year. We have far too many wars to fight as it is - let's not make the birthday of the Prince of Peace 'just another battleground'.
